my sweet girl. my only girl. the one who kisses my hand for no reason. the one who loves to snuggle. the one who takes pictures of our neighbors hair (below). the one who is so quick to show love and so quick to forgive. the one who brings me so much joy every.single.day. she said it. we are entering into tantrum, cry-at-the-drop-of-a-hat, retaliation, ultimatum-giving stage. and that’s ok. because she’s still sweet. and she’s 2. but this last weekend, saturday to be exact, she said it. a phrase i had never heard yet in all my 5+ years of being a mother.
i hate you.
and it hurt. bad. i know that one if not all of my kids are bound to tell me this at some point. but it was the first time. and it was from her. i don’t even know where she heard it, because we never say that. and if she came up with it on her own, well…it makes it that much worse. and it wasn’t even about anything big. it’s not like i lit her my little pony’s hair on fire. i think i just asked her to get in her seat and buckle up, again. it is all behind us now, but it still stings. i wasn’t ready for that.
